The Northeast Michigan Genealogical Society was founded in 1976 and is a non-profit organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code 19. Donations, gifts, and legacies are all tax deductible.

Created in 1840 from Alpena and Cheboygan Counties. Organized in 1869, the county seat is Harrisville. Originally called Neewago County, the name was changed in 1843.
